Anti Cracking Layer is a steel mesh reinforcing system designed to prevent
reflective cracking and/or rutting to carriageways.
The system
incorporates galvanised steel wire assemblies reinforced with twisted wire
strands which are sandwiched in a slurry surfacing layer and fixed to the
substrate with nails or hook bolts.
Road works are
nowadays increasingly carried out to re-habilitate the existing network.
Repairing cracked road surfacing by merely applying an additional layer of
asphalt is rarely a lasting solution. The cracks and discontinuities in the old
pavement are, indeed, weak spots where new cracks are easily initiated and can
subsequently propagate to the road surface as a result of the combined effects
of thermally induced stresses and traffic loading.
This means the the
deficiencies in the old pavement are in a way reflected at the surface, which
has suggested the term "reflective cracking".
